Flamenco guitar Gerundino Fernández 1974

This flamenco guitar was made in 1974 by Gerundino Fernández, a prestigious guitar maker, born in Almería. He is regarded as one of the best guitar makers ever, despite the facts of being self-taught and leading a bohemian life in his last years. His guitars have been present in stages all over with guitar performers like Paco Peña, Tomatito, Raimundo Amador…

This flamenco guitar dates from 1974, a year which belongs to what many people consider the best period in Gerundino´s life (1970-1980). The different woods in this flamenco guitar are of the top existing quality. The Canadian spruce top presents a highly marked and straight grain. The back and the sides are made of Indian rosewood, not a common combination of woods in Gerundino’s flamenco guitars. Gerundino Fernández was extremely selective as regards the choice of the woods for the guitar making. He always seeked for nothing but excellence in acoustics and beauty, which can be appreciated in every single guitar he made all along his career.

The sound of this guitar is simply spectacular. It has that particular timbre, so characteristic, distinguishing all his guitars. The bourdons are hoarse and deep, with a somewhat “hollow” sound which we curiously find in its trebles, too. This enhances and counterbalances the overall qualities brilliantly. The volume, quality and warmth it gives off, along with its distinct character, take this instrument to the rank of masterpiece.

The tension of this flamenco guitar is medium, and the height of the strings in the saddle and fingerboard is perfectly balanced, which gives us great comfort and some extra help for the performer to play it with both hands.

The conservation condition of this flamenco guitar is excellent and original in its entirety, It only has a small fissure, located on the upper part of the top, almost invisible to eyesight. In any case, it is perfectly repaired and backed up in the attached images.
