This flamenco guitar was built in 1974 by the Almerian luthier Gerundino Fernández, who is regarded as one of the greatest guitar makers in history, despite being self-taught and living a bohemian life toward the end of his career. His guitars have been heard on the world’s finest stages in the hands of renowned concert artists such as Paco Peña, Tomatito, and Raimundo Amador, among others.
This flamenco guitar dates from 1974, a year many consider to belong to the most brilliant period of the luthier’s career (1970–1980). The woods used are of the highest possible quality. The Canadian cedar top displays a very pronounced, straight, and even grain across its entire surface, while the back and sides are made of an extraordinary rosewood—an unusual wood combination in Gerundino’s flamenco guitars. Gerundino Fernández was extremely selective when choosing tonewoods, always seeking excellence in both acoustic performance and visual beauty, something clearly evident in every guitar he built throughout his life.
The sound produced by this guitar is truly spectacular. It possesses the distinctive and unmistakable timbre that sets this maker’s instruments apart, with deep, raspy yet brilliant basses that make rasgueados a true delight. The guitar projects a beautiful “hollow” echo, surprisingly present in the trebles as well. Its volume, tonal quality, warmth, and clearly defined personality elevate this instrument to the level of a true work of art.
The action is medium, and the string height—both at the saddle and along the fingerboard—is perfectly balanced, ensuring a uniform feel throughout the entire range. This setup provides outstanding comfort for both hands, facilitating fluid execution, reducing fatigue, and enhancing precision in right-hand articulation as well as left-hand pressure control and position shifts.
The overall condition of this flamenco guitar is excellent and completely original, with no cracks or repairs of any kind.
